DJI trademarks a new product called SPARK

DJI trademarks a new product called SPARK

On the 9th March 2017, DJI registered the trademark name SPARK under the category of drones; unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). DJI tends to bring to market products that it trademarks, so there’s a good chance the SPARK will be released this year. DJI is deliberately vague with trademark filings, so the nature of the device is purely speculation at this point, though since we broke this story photos of a DJI SPARK have been leaked, which suggest the SPARK is […]

GoPro Karma looking beyond the hype

GoPro Karma looking beyond the hype

Yesterday GoPro launched their long awaited GoPro quadcopter drone, called the Karma. In the UK, Karma is launched on the 23rd October with a retail price for the drone alone of £719.99, with a Hero 5 Black included it will be £999.99, this price is relatively competitive especially considering GoPro include a hand held stabiliser attachment and a back pack. With DJI due to release their DJI Mavic on the 27th September it’s possible DJI will try to undercut the […]

Colin “The Guinnmeister” Guinn says goodbye to 3DR!

Today Colin Guinn announced (via LinkedIn) the news that has been on the industry grapevine for some months now, the fact he’s leaving 3D Robotics (or 3DR as they now prefer to be called). Colin and his marketing team at least with 3DR have left on much better terms than they did with DJI which is good news. Colin Guinn is a casualty of 3DR’s decision to leave the consumer drone space and concentrate on enterprise solutions, rumours suggest 3DR’s […]

DJI has added a trademark for D-RTK which the name suggests is a DJI implementation of a Real Time Kinematic (RTK) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), such systems provide centimeter level accuracy, using either GPS, Glonass or other satellite systems whilst using a second mobile receiver. The trademark application can be read here: https://trademarks.justia.com/868/98/d-86898900.html To achieve centimeter level accuracy two GPS units are used with one of them being stationary (a base station) and another one in the drone. The […]

First reviews of the Phantom 4 are positive

First reviews of the Phantom 4 are positive

The first reviews for DJI’s new Phantom 4 have been positive overall. It has been noted the object avoidance won’t necessarily see thin objects like wires or branches and that the tracking can lose its subject; for most people these are relatively small niggles but potential buyers should be aware the new features are not fool proof. Gizmodo managed to crash their Phantom 4 whilst testing it, albeit their reviewer was flying in sports mode where the collision detection doesn’t […]

3DR is dead, long live 3DR!

3DR is dead, long live 3DR!

Spreading around the troll sauce. In recent weeks, forum trolls and at least one blog have been painting a picture of 3DR having failed, shut up shop and closed its door, which even a little research can confirm is far from the truth, in some cases the discussion on 3DR is wishful thinking from fanbois drinking the DJI Kool-Aid; in some cases it’s downright lies and in other cases it’s a negative take on facts that are in the public […]
