3D Robotics release the Solo

3D Robotics release the Solo

Today 3D Robotics released the Solo, which when the GoPro is factored in, works out more expensive than a Phantom 3 but we would argue offers more functionality and future proofing with altogether better customer service.  The Solo has a base price of $999 with the 3 axis gimbal costing $399, on to which you’d add your GoPro, albeit many drone owners already have a GoPro. In the UK the price for the Solo is a little under £1000 (without gimbal): Solo Quadcopter […]

New drone announcements this week start with the 3D Robotics SOLO

This week everyone was focussed on DJI’s new announcement, expected to be the Phantom 3, but this evening 3D Robotics stole some of the thunder of publicity with a teaser trailer of their new quadcopter, which they didn’t name.  However, in a cheeky marketing move they had the name of drone appear for a single frame in the video, it was spotted surprisingly quickly and posted on Facebook.  The Twitter account @DIYDroneSafety noted the SOLO trademark had been registered for a while […]

DJI & 3DR target prosumers with new multicopters

It’s been a busy week with the launch of the DJI Inspire 1 quadcopter with its built in 4k camera which is interchangeable, now 3D Robotics has launched a new X8+ multicopter, albeit, it’s not really new, so much as an update to an existing product. Already comparisons are being made between DJI’s and 3DR’s multicopters given the fact both launched within close proximity, yet it’s clear the X8+ and Inspire are not really competing or likely to appeal to […]

3D Robotics announces the IRIS+

3D Robotics have announced the new IRIS+ with a YouTube video presented by Colin Guinn. The IRIS+ has a longer flight time than the original IRIS, now claimed at 15 minutes with a gimbal, a 3S 5100mAh battery aids this performance improvement.  The propellers have been changed for a self tightening screw on set, along with a much lighter set of landing legs, similar to designs the community itself has been making.  The official 3DR video shows that arm LEDs […]

Colin Guinn joins 3D Robotics

The Guinnmeister is back! Well the big news of this week, this month and possibly this year is that Colin Guinn is back in the multicopter business and this time with 3D Robotics, his employment was confirmed this afternoon. 3DR has so far hired at least 5 other ex-DJI staff (thanks to the diydronesafety Twitter account for the heads up): Robert Hull – Cinematographer Scott Horn – UAV Pilot Kate Blaising – Marketing Lon Breedlove – Producer > Update August […]
