Panasonix GX7 – Claims of GH3 video quality in a smaller body



There are a lot of exciting cameras about in general, where a camera looks special for both normal video-photography and also aerial video-photography then I’m interested.  The Panasonic Lumix GH3 is a wonderful camera (apart from the lack of focus peaking and a less than perfect EVF) and has been combined with the GH2 Zenmuse (after modification) and used in shows such as the BBC’s Topgear, however for amateurs or semi-pros other options are always of interest.

The GoPro Zenmuse is popular, along with other GoPro gimbals, but the comparative lack of quality especially in dynamic range and in dark conditions means the GoPro is a compromise.

The upcoming Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera looks promising, but with Blackmagic cameras being known for delays and also the fact 25/30 FPS (Frames Per Second) is a maximum limits its appeal.  Really 50(PAL)/60(NTSC) FPS is the minimum for aerial photography, one to limit jello, two because it allows for slow motion.  To get slow motion, you would edit on a 25/30 FPS timeline then interpret your footage to this lower frame rate resulting in slow motion.

This brings us to the upcoming Panasonic GX7, claims are already being made that the video quality could match the GH3, it has 50/60 FPS and in body stabilisation which the GH3 doesn’t even have.  Reportedly this is only 2 axis and only works for stills so the benefits for aerial photography are still limited, albeit there are some very good Panasonic lenses with stabilisation.  Given the body is more compact and no doubt lighter the GX7 is looking like a promising camera that could be ideal for aerial video-photography, it has the potential to match or beat equivalent Sony NEX cameras and could certainly be amongst the best Micro 4/3 cameras to use for aerial or ground based video-photography.

Let’s hope in the UK, Panasonic doesn’t try to over inflate the RRP compared to the price in Europe as it initially tried with the GH3…
